Japan’s Surrender and Korea’s Independence (1945)

Japan was defeated in World War II and officially surrendered to the Allied powers in August 1945. This historic event brought the 35 years of Japanese colonial rule over Korea to an abrupt end. The surrender led directly to Korea’s liberation and eventual independence as a nation. However, following this freedom, the country was soon divided into the regions of North and South Korea.
